NEW PHOTOS RELEASED: Hilo, Hawaii 1960 Tsunami Aftermath

I just noticed this video uploaded by youtube user sdcheapshot and it shows pictures of the aftermath of the 1960 Hilo Tsunami that I don’t think many folks have seen before:

This tidal wave hit Hilo on May 23, 1960, destroyed 530 buildings and killed 61 in spite of the siren warning system that was established in 1948. Most of the people who were killed ignored the early warning sirens.

The USS Lurline cruise ship departs port hours before the pending tsunami arrives. Young boys frolic for the coins passengers toss from the ship, seeming unaware of the pending disaster.
