The Murder of Puna Resident Gary Poretsky (The Admission)… The Video

I previously blogged about the murder of Gary Poretsky here, here, here, here, here and here.

Gary Bruce Poretsky, a 46-year-old resident of Hawaii was shot to death in the Northern Thailand city of Chiang Mai in the early morning of March 22, 2008 by Australian man William Thomas Douglas.

Douglas turned himself in to police several hours later. In this video shot on March 23 Douglas clearly says he shot Mr Poretsky because he didn’t like him. At his trial in October, 2008 he claimed he couldn’t remember shooting Mr Poretsky.

Douglas was sentenced to four years prison for the murder of Mr Poretsky with the sentence being cut in half to two years because of his guilty plea. This is field edited news footage.

  3. Damon,

You and I seem to be the only people who give a damn about this crime. I recently heard from reliable sources that William Thomas Douglas is trying to raise enough cash to buy his way out of jail.

The US State Department and the US Embassy and the US Consulate in Chiang Mai have done very little in this matter and provided very little information and/or assistance to the family of Mr Poretsky.

I have never heard of someone getting such a lite sentence in Thailand for murder. The results of this trial smell like a back of prawns left in the sun.

As an Australian there is little I can do. I would though urge all US citizens who find the prospect of this disgusting and vile man being able to buy his way out of prison to write their congressional representatives, the Thai government, local Thai diplomatic missions and media organizations in the US.

I do not believe it is to late for the sentence to be reviewed now that there is a new Government in Thailand.

At least lets make sure this SOB serves his full sentence.

The Thailand Ministry of Justice can be emailed from here,

The current Prime Minister of Thailand is Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva – educated at Oxford in England. Emails for him can be sent via the office of the Secretariat of the cabinet: [email protected]

I am surprised, but not shocked, at the total lack of action by the martini sipping layabouts employed at the US Embassy and US Consulate here in Thailand at the shabby way they have treated the NOK of Mr Poretsky.

Perhaps the message they are really sending is that Americans can be murdered anywhere in the world and we will turn a blind eye to corruption that sees the perpetrators receive little more than a slap on the wrist. I guess if Douglas was a Muslim the reaction would have been different.
